How the Archive Investigates

Curiosity begins the investigation. Evidence determines where it ends.

   Follow the Evidence

   An investigation goes where the material leads, including to conclusions the Archive did not expect.

   Distinguish Evidence from Interpretation

   Documented fact, consensus, probable interpretation, inference, disputed views, speculation and synthesis are named as such.

   Look for Ways to Be Wrong

   Every reading is tested against the strongest case that would undo it.

   Consider Rival Explanations

   Competing explanations are presented on their merits rather than as foils.

   Treat Uncertainty Honestly

   Where the evidence does not settle a question, the Archive says so plainly.

   Correct the Record

   Corrections are made openly, and investigations are updated rather than quietly revised.

   Explore Unconventional Ideas Without Lowering Standards

   Unusual ideas are investigated fairly; the evidentiary standard does not move to accommodate them.

These indicators describe the state of the evidence, not the probability that any particular theory is correct.
